Prof. Andy Calvert
Simon Fraser University
Professional Bio
Andy Calvert is Professor of geophysics in the Department of Earth Sciences at Simon Fraser University. As an exploration seismologist, he uses deep seismic reflection data and 3-D crustal-scale tomographic velocity models to understand crustal formation and architecture in a variety of tectonic settings around the world, including modern subduction zones and Archean cratons. He was involved in three major transects of the Canadian Lithoprobe program, interpreting deep seismic reflection data from Quebec and Ontario. He also led Geoscience BC’s multidisciplinary Nechako geoscience project to assess the hydrocarbon potential of the volcanic-covered Nechako-Chilcotin plateau of central British Columbia.
Before joining SFU in 1998, Dr Calvert worked with Western Geophysical in London, Schlumberger in Gabon and Algeria, and PanCanadian Petroleum in Calgary. He obtained his PhD in geophysics from Cambridge University in 1985, held a Killam Postdoctoral Fellowship at UBC, and also spent four years as Chercheur at Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal.
