Dr Sreejith Chettootty
Assistant Professor - MES Ponnani College (University of Calicut), Kerala, India
Professional Bio
The areas of research that currently Dr. Sreejith is interested in are classified into applications of the tools of metamorphic and magmatic petrology; geochemistry; and geochronology to decipher evolutionary history of planet. His expertise in these fields includes structural and petrological field mapping of high-grade gneiss terrains, systematic sampling and analysis in extremely complex migmatitic terrains, and thermodynamic modelling of metamorphic phases. The research problem he is involved at present addresses two fundamental problems of planetary science: (1) “when did plate tectonics begin?” or more precisely, when exactly did the modern-style plate tectonics took over from an earlier style of tectonics and why such tectonics are missing in other planetary bodies, and (2) linking chemistry and tectonics for geochemical/cosmochemical evolution of the planetary bodies.
Further to this, Dr. Sreejith is also interested and working on the heritage significance of natural stones, especially that of the charnockites and high-grade gneisses. At present, his involvement with the IGCP is limited to that of an HSS correspondent, which provided him greater opportunity to learn about the activities of IUGS and HSS.
